The best leaders understand the importance of constant evolution. They recognize that you can never be the best possible version of yourself and that there is always room for improvement. If you’re looking to become a better boss or manager, then you need to adopt this same forward-looking attitude.

One simple way to become a better leader is by playing mind games. These mental activities can teach you leadership skills that translate directly to the workplace. While there are many mind games that could help you as a leader, here are three you can start with today.

“What If…”

An effective leader must always think ahead, preparing themselves for even the most unlikely of possibilities. Whenever a problem arises, you should already have a solution in mind. “What if…” is the mind game that can best prepare you to solve a multitude of problems. The game itself is simple. All you have to do is ask yourself how you would respond if a particular problem were to arise. For example, you could wonder, “What if my most trusted team member were to suddenly quit?” By determining how you would respond, you’ll be prepared for that possibility — making this game a habit will turn you into a better overall leader.

“If/Then”

Like “What if…”, this game is also a great tool for boosting your general preparedness as a leader. All you have to do is ask yourself how you’ll respond when a particular situation arises. For example, you could decide that “If someone in my office gets sick with Covid-19, then I’ll have my team members work from home for a week.” In addition to helping you form concrete solutions for potential problems, this simple exercise will force you to adopt a more prudent, forward-thinking mindset.

Mental Contrasting

This is a straightforward mental game in which you force yourself to come up with actionable plans for particular problems. First, you must decide upon a specific wish or goal. Then, focus on what the outcome of achieving that goal would be. Next, identify potential obstacles in your way. Finally, develop a plan that will help you overcome the obstacles to fulfill your wish and enjoy the outcome.
